Super Meat Boy is back—and this time, he’s got depth. Super Meat Boy 3D, a fully 3D reimagining of the brutally hard platformer that helped define the indie game boom, was officially revealed during the Xbox Showcase on June 9. Developed by Sluggerfly (Ben and Ed) and published by Headup, the game is set to release in early 2026 for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC. It’ll also launch day one on Xbox Game Pass.
If you thought dodging buzz saws in 2D was intense, just wait until you’re doing it across three dimensions.
“It’s not easy to convert a 2D hardcore platformer into 3D—but they’ve nailed it.”
That’s the word from Super Meat Boy co-creator Tommy Refenes, who gave his full blessing to Sluggerfly’s take on the franchise. “They made us laugh, and we knew they’d bring the right kind of chaotic energy to Meat Boy,” Refenes said.
The debut trailer doesn’t hold back on the carnage, showcasing Meat Boy’s now-fully-rotatable misery as he wall-jumps, air-dashes, and dies repeatedly in brutal, beautifully grotesque environments—from fiery forests to crumbling caverns. And yes, Dr. Fetus is back, tuxedo jar and all.
What’s New in 3D?
Despite the dimensional shift, the core experience remains unapologetically old-school. Expect:
- Precision platforming that will break you, but fairly
- Brutal boss fights that reward grit and persistence
- Dark World levels for the truly masochistic
- A gloriously aggressive soundtrack, possibly loud enough to get you kicked out of Guitar Center
And of course… It’s all in 3D. The game’s environments now add depth to the pain, turning classic Meat Boy wall-jumps and twitch-dodging into full-blown spatial nightmares.
Coming in Hot (and Bloody)
Super Meat Boy 3D is slated for release in early 2026, with funding support from the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW. Players can wishlist the game now on the Xbox Store, and it will be available day one for Xbox Game Pass Console, PC, and Ultimate subscribers.
