SacriFire Interview – Pixelated Milk Talks JRPG Inspirations, Kickstarter Challenges, and Motoi Sakuraba’s Soundtrack

SacriFire is an ambitious JRPG-inspired project from indie studio Pixelated Milk. Combining a distinctive battle system, detailed worldbuilding, and music from legendary composer Motoi Sakuraba, the game aims to capture the spirit of classic RPGs while carving out its own identity. We spoke with project lead and studio founder Bartosz Łojewski about his inspirations, the lessons learned from Regalia: Of Men and Monarchs, and how Kickstarter shaped development.

A Lifelong Love for RPGs

For Bartosz Łojewski, RPGs have always been central. “I have been playing RPGs my whole life. Starting with the venerable Final Fantasy VII on the PSX, I’ve enjoyed a wide variety of titles ranging from major blockbusters like Persona or Baldur’s Gate to more niche offerings such as the Trails series,” Łojewski said. That passion carries directly into SacriFire, where he holds the original vision for the project.

Lessons from Regalia

Pixelated Milk previously developed Regalia: Of Men and Monarchs, and many of the lessons learned from that project shaped SacriFire. Łojewski pointed out that “in JRPGs, it’s really the characters that are key to everything.” That led the team to build SacriFire around a “broad, engaging cast of heroes and misfits.” Another takeaway was the importance of “punching above our weight” in the indie space. The team invested in extensive voice acting and brought in well-known soundtrack composers to make the project feel bigger.

The Realities of Kickstarter

Both Regalia and SacriFire were funded through Kickstarter, something Łojewski admits is a double-edged sword. “Kickstarter is always tricky because it essentially shoehorns the project into a rigid set of expected features right from the start. That makes it impossible or at least very difficult to pivot with the game,” he explained. Still, the campaign brought a core community of fans who provided valuable feedback throughout development.

Collaborating with Motoi Sakuraba

SacriFire features music from veteran composer Motoi Sakuraba, best known for his work on Star Ocean and Tales series. Łojewski described the collaboration as straightforward but impactful: “We knew from the start that working with a major JRPG composer would be hugely beneficial for the project. Mr. Sakuraba is well known for his synthy, punchy soundtracks… so to me he felt like a perfect fit for SacriFire. We reached out and were delighted to hear that he was interested.”

Nearing the Finish Line

After years of iteration and testing, SacriFire is in its final phase. “We feel we’re in the home stretch,” Łojewski confirmed. The team is now focused on final content assembly and polishing. To backers, he offered gratitude: “To our backers—essentially our most loyal fans—we just want to say ‘thank you.’” For newcomers, his pitch is direct: “If you enjoy JRPGs or JRPG-inspired titles, deep worldbuilding, or completely unique battle systems, check out SacriFire on Steam when it releases.”

SacriFire Releases Q1 2026

SacriFire represents Pixelated Milk’s attempt to merge traditional JRPG influences with new ideas and a bold presentation. With a veteran composer on board, a cast built around character-first storytelling, and years of iteration from fan feedback, the game is nearly ready for release. SacriFire launches in Q1 2026 for PC and console versions to follow later in the year.
