Retro-inspired indie publisher Top Hat Studios, alongside developer Slime King Games, has announced that Under the Island will launch on February 17, 2026. The 2D action-adventure RPG will be available on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Xbox platforms.
Steeped in ’90s-era action-RPG charm and anime-inspired flair, Under the Island features artwork by Simone Grünewald, former art director at Daedalic Entertainment, and promises a colorful, exploration-driven adventure packed with humor, mystery, and offbeat surprises.
A Mysterious Island Full of Secrets
Set on the vibrant and unpredictable Seashell Island, Under the Island takes players across a wide range of distinct regions. From the icy peaks of Bran Bran Peak, where cereal is inexplicably mined, to tropical villages and dusty deserts inhabited by sentient, walking pots with a strong dislike for outsiders, every area offers new discoveries, enemies, and environmental quirks.
The game leans heavily into player-driven exploration. While classic action-RPG combat anchors the experience, progression is fueled by curiosity, experimentation, and a willingness to venture off the beaten path. Players begin their journey armed with little more than a trusty hockey stick, gradually expanding their abilities by uncovering treasures hidden in dungeons, minigames, and secret corners of the island or by bartering and “negotiating” with its unusual inhabitants.
Chart Your Own Path Beneath the Surface
At the heart of Under the Island is a sense of freedom. Players are encouraged to carve their own route through the world, using an eclectic set of tools such as shovels, trumpets, and even birds to open new paths and uncover hidden areas. Secrets can be found everywhere, from monumental island landmarks to tucked-away nooks waiting to be discovered.
A newly released trailer showcases the game’s release date, platforms, and whimsical tone, highlighting both its nostalgic roots and playful modern twists.
A Sinking Mystery and a New Beginning
Players step into the role of Nia, a newcomer to Seashell Island, who teams up with local girl Avocado to investigate a looming disaster: the island is destined to sink beneath the ocean. As Nia explores the island’s diverse regions, she’ll battle strange creatures, meet quirky locals, and unravel ancient mysteries tied to the island’s fate.
The narrative unfolds naturally through exploration and character interactions, blending lighthearted humor with an underlying sense of urgency as the island’s future hangs in the balance.
Classic Top-Down Adventure with a Modern Touch
Under the Island delivers classic top-down exploration brought to life with vibrant pixel art and interconnected biomes. The island is divided into six distinct regions, including eerie greenhouses, frozen caverns, and chaotic sawmills, each packed with unique dangers, upgrades, and side activities. Whether competing in cook-offs, reuniting lost cats, or dodging the wrath of cereal pirates, there’s always something unexpected waiting around the corner.
Combat features an array of bizarre enemies, from vomiting eggplants to tunneling wolves, encouraging players to experiment with artifacts, loot, and newly unlocked abilities. Players can even befriend animals along the way, especially if they’re willing to share a few treats.
