Developer Another Angle Games and publisher Owlcat Games have released a new character spotlight for Shadow of the Road, introducing Ishida the Boulder, one of the party members players will recruit in the upcoming tactical RPG.
The new trailer highlights Ishida’s role in combat and offers a closer look at the personality of the game’s powerful frontline defender.
A Loyal Protector With a Fearsome Fighting Style
Ishida serves as the party’s primary tank, specializing in absorbing enemy attacks while protecting allies on the battlefield. Known as “The Boulder,” he can draw enemy attention away from teammates while delivering devastating blows of his own.
His combat style is as brutal as it is straightforward, featuring powerful headbutts, crushing bear hugs, fearless charges, and sweeping strikes with a massive nōdachi. Ishida’s strength makes him effective against both human enemies and the supernatural threats that roam the world of Shadow of the Road, including yōkai and mechanical foes.
Despite his intimidating presence in battle, Ishida also brings humor and warmth to the party. Quick to start a fight, especially after a few cups of sake, he balances his fiery temper with loyalty, generosity, and a love of good food.
A War-Torn Vision of Feudal Japan
Shadow of the Road is set during the Bakumatsu era, a turbulent period in Japanese history marked by conflict between the Tokugawa Shogunate and supporters of Emperor Meiji (born Mutsuhito).
The game blends historical inspiration with Japanese mythology and steampunk technology, creating a world where samurai, spirits, and mechanical constructs coexist.
Players will lead a group of adventurers through this shifting landscape, where political intrigue, supernatural threats, and personal rivalries shape the story.
Tactical Combat and Story-Driven Choices
At the center of Shadow of the Road is a turn-based tactical combat system that emphasizes teamwork and character synergy. Each party member brings unique abilities and motivations that influence how battles unfold.
The story begins when the Tokugawa spymaster recruits ronin warriors Satoru and Akira to protect a mysterious boy with uncontrollable powers. As the journey unfolds, additional allies, including Ishida, join the group, each with their own personal goals and histories.
Player decisions will shape relationships within the party, potentially strengthening friendships, fracturing alliances, or changing the course of the war itself.
