SEGA and Xbox shared a large new look at Stranger Than Heaven during the “Xbox Presents: A Special Look at Stranger Than Heaven” showcase. The broadcast revealed the game’s story setup, cities, cast, combat system, and showbiz mechanics, and debuted its original theme song.
Developed by RGG Studio, Stranger Than Heaven is a new action-adventure game launching this winter for Xbox Game Pass, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Xbox Cloud Gaming, Steam, and PlayStation 5.
A 50-Year Story Across Five Eras
The game follows Makoto Daito, a young man born to an American father and Japanese mother in 1915 San Francisco. After losing both parents and facing discrimination because of his heritage, Makoto secretly boards a ship bound for Japan, setting off a journey that spans decades.
The story unfolds across five cities and eras:
- 1915 Kokura, Fukuoka
- 1929 Kure, Hiroshima
- 1943 Minami, Osaka
- 1951 Atami, Shizuoka
- 1965 Shinjuku, Tokyo
Each location reflects a different period of Japanese history, ranging from wartime tensions to postwar tourism and entertainment districts.
Showbiz Systems and Music Creation
One of the showcase’s biggest reveals focused on Makoto’s rise as a performer and producer. After discovering his musical talent, Makoto began building live shows across Japan by scouting performers and creating original tracks from environmental sounds.
Players can collect sounds from daily life and combat, including train noise, street sounds, animal cries, and even enemy grunts, then combine them into songs for performances. Players also choose setlists, cast members, and production layouts for each show.
Combat Focuses on Brutal, Reactive Fighting
RGG Studio also detailed the game’s combat system, which uses independent left and right-side controls for attacks, defense, counters, grapples, and weapon use.
Players can chain together punches, throws, tackles, and weapon attacks while adapting to enemy movement in real time. Weapons include knives, hammers, and katanas.
International Cast and Theme Song Revealed
The game’s cast includes Yu Shirota, Dean Fujioka, Snoop Dogg, Moeka Hoshi, Tori Kelly, Akio Otsuka, Tokuma Nishioka, Satoshi Fujihara, Cordell Broadus, Ado, and legendary actor Bunta Sugawara, recreated in-game with permission from his family and archival materials from Toei.
The showcase also premiered the original theme song, “Stranger Than Heaven,” featuring Snoop Dogg, Satoshi Fujihara, Ado, and Tori Kelly.
