Nordcurrent Labs and developer Black Tower Basement have announced that Defender of the Crown: The Legend Returns will launch on August 13 for PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
Revealed during the Future Games Show Summer Showcase, the remake rebuilds the Amiga classic from the ground up for its 40th anniversary. The new version modernizes the Saxon-Norman conflict with updated visuals, refined mechanics, and a new roguelite mode.
Three Ways to Play
Defender of the Crown: The Legend Returns includes three modes.
Retro Mode lets players experience the original Amiga version of the game. Classic Mode reimagines the original with a new visual style and smoother gameplay.
Kingdom Mode offers the biggest change, turning Defender of the Crown into a roguelite deck-builder with dice-based combat.
Kingdom Mode Adds Deck-Building and Dice Combat
In Kingdom Mode, players battle across the map to unite the kingdom and defeat three enemy lords in their strongholds.
Combat combines army units, dice, and tactic cards. Army units determine starting dice and score, while players use cards each turn to gain the upper hand. As runs continue, new dice types, relics, and mechanics add more strategic options.
Players can also explore points of interest, enter tournaments, rescue Saxon ladies, raid for gold, and besiege castles to weaken enemy armies.
While the map regions remain fixed, events and encounters change each run.
Coming to PC and Consoles
Defender of the Crown: The Legend Returns will be available on PC via Steam and GOG, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
The game can be wishlisted now on Steam, GOG, Xbox, and PlayStation storefronts.
