Defender of the Crown: The Legend Returns Out Now on PC and Consoles

Defender of the Crown: The Legend Returns is available now on PC via Steam and GOG, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S for $19.99.

Black Tower Basement and Nordcurrent Labs released the rebuilt classic to mark the series’ 40th anniversary.

Three Ways to Play

Defender of the Crown: The Legend Returns includes three modes.

Retro Mode preserves the original Amiga version, while Classic Mode updates the game with modern visuals and refined mechanics.

The new Kingdom Mode adds a roguelite deck-builder structure with dice-based combat, where players work to unite the kingdom by defeating three enemy lords across a war-torn map.

Kingdom Mode Adds Roguelite Runs

Kingdom Mode mixes tactical deck-building with dice-driven battles.

Army units affect each run’s starting dice and score, while tactic cards shape each turn. Players can also unlock new dice types, relics, and mechanics as campaigns grow.

Outside combat, players can enter tournaments, rescue Saxon ladies, raid for gold, and besiege castles. The map stays the same between playthroughs, but randomized events and encounters change each run.

Sachs said he was honored to have worked on the original and grateful to the fans who kept it alive across four decades.

Defender of the Crown: The Legend Returns is available now on Steam, GOG, Nintendo eShop, PlayStation Store, and Xbox Store.
