The Expanse: Osiris Reborn has introduced a revised default appearance for its male protagonist and confirmed Blythe Melin as the voice of both the Captain and his identical twin brother, J. Owlcat Games shared a video showing the updated character model and performances ahead of the game’s spring 2027 release.
The Captain remains fully customizable. The redesign gives players a starting point to use or adjust the default appearance, with Owlcat aiming for a less conventional military look and a more detailed presentation.
A New Default Design for the Captain and J
The visual changes apply to both the male Captain and J, reflecting their relationship as identical twins. Owlcat says the updated design better fits the setting while giving players a more polished base for creating their own protagonist.
The announcement focuses on the default male model rather than changing the game’s character customization options. You can still build your Captain’s appearance instead of adopting the preset.
J, meanwhile, has a more carefree and relaxed personality than his brother. That distinction also shapes how Melin approaches the two roles.
Blythe Melin Discusses Voicing Identical Twins
Melin’s previous game credits include Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail, Diablo IV, and Ready or Not. For Osiris Reborn, he is performing two closely related characters who serve different purposes in the story.
In the announcement, Melin described the challenge of making the brothers sound related without giving them identical personalities or mannerisms. The Captain acts as the player’s avatar across branching dialogue, while J has a more established personality for the performance to draw from.
Melin credited the writers and directors with helping define that separation. The result needs to accommodate player choices for the Captain while keeping J recognizable as his own character.
More Cast Announcements Are Coming
Owlcat plans to share details about the female protagonist’s voice and other cast members later. This update centers on the male Captain and J, giving players an early sample of their revised presentation.
The Expanse: Osiris Reborn launches in spring 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC through Steam, the Epic Games Store, and GOG.
