Village in the Shade is headed west later this year, with NIS America confirming that the spooky farming sim will launch on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and PC in Fall 2026.
Developed by Nippon Ichi Software, the studio behind series like Disgaea and Phantom Brave, Village in the Shade mixes the slower pace of a farming sim with a more uneasy setup. Set in the Japanese mountain village of Kagatsu, the game asks players to settle into a new life of planting crops, customizing a home, and getting to know the locals. It also makes one thing clear early on: this village has rules, and they should probably be taken seriously.
A quiet village with something off beneath the surface
On paper, Village in the Shade sounds inviting. You can grow crops, decorate your home, gather resources around your farm, and spend time with a cast of townspeople. The game also leans into a hand-painted style that fits the setting well, giving Kagatsu a softer look that smartly clashes with the darker tone underneath.
NIS America says players will be able to relax by the brook, walk through town, and take part in seasonal events like summer festivals and cherry-blossom viewing. That cozy structure is familiar, but the setup around it gives the game a different edge.
The village comes with a few strict warnings: don’t talk to strangers, don’t leave the village, and don’t go out at night. That framing gives Village in the Shade a clear hook. It wants the comfort of a life sim, but also to make you feel like something is wrong the entire time.
Farming, decorating, and uncovering Kagatsu’s secrets
The core features sound like a solid mix of farming sim basics and light social systems. Players can buy furniture in town, decorate their house, and craft fences and other items using materials gathered around the farm. On the social side, traditional festivals and community events help build out village life and your connection to the people living there.
Still, the bigger draw may be the mystery. NIS America says players can choose to dig into the truth behind Kagatsu, though doing so may come with a cost. That tension between cozy routine and hidden horror is what gives Village in the Shade its identity, and it could help it stand out in a crowded farming sim space.
Limited Edition preorders are open now
NIS America also announced a Limited Edition for Village in the Shade, now available to preorder for $89.99. The set includes a copy of the game, a collector’s box, an art book, an original soundtrack, an acrylic block, and a set of metal pins.
For players already sold on the game’s mix of farming, village life, and creeping dread, it’s the usual premium package NIS America fans have come to expect.
